If someone would’ve asked me 10 years ago, what do you want to do when you grow up? My first answer would not have been: sell children's clothing for a living. But life never turns out how you plan it...
After graduating from San Diego State University, with a B.S. in Psychology, I decided to live in San Diego and try to answer the question: what I want to be "when I grow up". A year passed, and San Diego did not help me find that answer, so I moved back home to Los Angeles. There, my aunt Miriam Schwartz, offered me a job with her girl's dress line, C.W. Designs. So, in 2002 I went to work for my aunt, where I learned fabric, trim, pattern making, the whole nine yards! After being fluent in the language of clothing design, I went to the ENK Show in NY to help represent C.W. Designs at their booth. It was there that I discovered my calling... SALES! I loved working with the customers, writing orders, selling the line, and the connection and friendships you make with people along the way.
Learning all that I was going to learn with C.W. Designs, I decided I wanted to spread my wings and broaden my horizons. Finding your calling is a rare moment and I had to take advantage of it. When I happened to see a position open up in Children's Apparel Sales, I decided to take the plunge, and dive head first. I took my first real showroom job with Bill Kahn working with lines such as Monkeywear, Charlie Rocket, and Zutano. It was there that Bill helped develop my sales skills in a showroom setting: showing lines, merchandising, writing orders, and helping steer the design teams of each brand in a direction that would create trends in kids fashion.
In 2006, I was offered a position with Showroom 903 as the Children's Sales Rep for Joe's Jeans, C&C California, and Da-Nang. It was an opportunity I could not pass up, so I jumped at the chance to grow the business of these lines and lead the sales on the west coast for such prestigious brands. As my sales increased, my lines grew in size, until it was finally time to open Mini 903 on the 6th Floor of the California Market Center in late 2006. I helped design and create Mini 903, and was solely put in charge of the kids business for Mini 903. With our own showroom in place, we had the opportunity to expand the business. That’s when we decided to take on additional brands including Penguin, Petite Joie, Mini Rotation and many many more.
After many months of deliberation, in the spring of 2009, I decided it was time for me to open my own showroom and run my own business. I added up my years of experience and all of the invaluable knowledge I had gained over those years, and created my own philosophy and style of doing business that I wanted to introduce to Children’s Apparel Sales. I wanted to create a showroom that I envisioned and the kind of customer service and sales I wanted to deliver to my lines and clients. So I took the leap, and Nicky Rose Kids opened its doors in July 2009.
As they say all good things happen in bundles, and a few months after Nicky Rose Kids opened it’s doors, my husband and I found out we had a bundle of our own on the way--I was pregnant with our son, Brooklyn!
With a new business and a baby on the way, 2009 was definitely a big year with big challenges. I didn’t shy away from any of the challenges and here I am today, representing some of the best brands in Children’s clothing that I believe in, with a great family who supports me.
In 2012, Nicky and her husband welcomed their second son, Caleb.
Currently, Nicky Rose Kids represents some of the hottest children's brands on the west coast. Nicky Rose Kids is owned and operated by Nicky Coscas.
